For families who have chosen cremation for a loved one, the next decision involves what to do with the remains. Some choose to keep the cremated remains in their home, have them placed in a columbarium niche at a local cemetery, or scatter the ashes in a meaningful place.
Repatriation is the act of restoring a person to his or her native land. There may be a personal desire to be buried in the native country that person was born in. Alternatively, the family may feel that the person's soul may not be at peace if the body was buried anywhere but their homeland.
Exhumation is defined as the removal of human remains, from the place where they are buried. This is then usually followed by the remains being buried in a different grave, by cremation of the remains, or by repatriation of the remains to the deceased’s country of origin.
