Scattering Cremated Remains

Scattering Cremated Remains

For families who have chosen cremation for a loved one, the next decision involves what to do with the remains. Some choose to keep the cremated remains in their home, have them placed in a columbarium niche at a local cemetery, or scatter the ashes in a meaningful place.

Cremation provides families with more time to arrange where and how to scatter the ashes. While there is no policing agency overseeing scattering, there are some basics you should know:
  • If you plan on scattering ashes on private property, it's smart to receive written permission from the owner
  • Cremated remains bear little resemblance to ashes; they look and behave a lot like small-grained sand or gravel. However, there are some fine-grains mixed in so be sure to check the wind direction before scattering.
  • Use discretion when scattering on public land, such as beaches and parks
  • The cremation container must be disposed of separately and in an environmentally-safe manner
  • Any flowers or wreaths used in the ash scattering ceremony held at sea must decompose. No plastic flowers or other non-decomposable items should be left behind
You may also wish to check out our selection of biodegradable and scattering urns prior to making plans to scatter the cremated remains.

    Scattering at Sea Ceremonies

If your family would like to coordinate a scattering ceremony at sea, we would recommend Marine Eco Tours

"Scattering the ashes of a loved one into the ocean can be an extraordinarily beautiful way to say goodbye. Many people love the idea of the ocean teaming with life. Many of our requests are related to the ocean,
the whales and/or the wildlife having been a special place of significance to the deceased.

Typically we travel out of the harbor about 45 minutes or so, come to a rest at which point the ashes are released. Flowers are often tossed into the water after which the vessel encircles  the area and returns to port."

    We're Here to Help

We understand that is not always feasible for a family to take care of scattering cremated remains themselves. For families who choose not to participate, our staff can respectfully scatter cremated remains on your behalf. We are glad to offer the following options to choose from:
    • Scattering at Sea: during kayaking excursions in the Salish Sea and Gulf Islands
    • Scattering on Land: on private lands in the beautiful coastal forests of Vancouver Island
Please note we are not able to provide an exact location for future visitation, as the locations can be inaccessible or on private land.

Should you need further advice, would like to purchase an urn or require our assistance with scattering ashes, feel free to contact us.
