How To Start Pre-Planning Funeral Arrangements

Funeral pre-planning begins with the decision to start pre-arranging your funeral. From there, it's all about research, understanding your options, and deciding on the ones that best fit you and what you want. We are able to help guide you and your loved ones, make suggestions or explain what options you have available to you but, ultimately, it is your choice. We have provided some loose steps to start you on your pre-planning journey.

Set Goals & Review Limitations

Setting goals allows you to keep track of your intentions if it gets overwhelming during the planning process. Make these goals at the start of your journey after some research so you can understand what the limitations are based on your financial situation, location, and other factors. and re-visit them throughout the planning process. If they need to be re-evaluated then they can. Bring these goals to your first meeting with a funeral director or pre-planner. Some goals include budget limits or choice final disposition methods.

Ask Questions & Look at Available Options

Do not be afraid to ask the questions you need to get a better understanding of what your available options are. These are your final arrangements and you need to understand what they entail. Do as much research as possible. Once you have a better understanding of what your options are, identify the choices that appeal to you most; rank them from most to least preferred or priority of importance to you.

Weigh Pros vs. Cons & Consult with Loved Ones

Using the same list, write down the pros and cons of each option. Talk to your loved ones about what they think of your list and ask if they have any input or other ideas. Take note of this as well. If you would prefer to make this decision without the consultation of loved ones, weighing the pros and cons is still a very valuable tool and you can always count on us to provide input at your request.

Make a Final Decision and Write Out Your Plan

After taking the time to reflect on your research and feelings, you will need to come to a final decision. Write out your wishes for final arrangements with as much detail as possible. This will limit at dispute or choices that could be interpreted differently after your passing. It is important that your choice funeral home has a copy of these final plans, as well as your executor or incorporate them into your last will & testament to make them more official.  You can also begin making payments towards these plans to lessen the financial burden on your loved ones.
