Gone fishing…
Born in Shellbrook Saskatchewan he was the oldest of six children of Ernest and Kathleen(Kay). When the family came to BC, they lived on Galiano Island. Dad would go onto to live in several coastal communities but primarily Nanaimo.
Predeceased by his father, mother, brother Glenn, sister Eileen, and son in law Bill. Survived by his sisters Sheila, Karen (Richard) and Patti (Barry) as well as his son Ron and daughters Angela and Gail (Wayne). He was Papa to grandchildren Camille (Josh), Ron (Clara), Shawna (Eric) and Cecilia (Mak) and his latest loves, great grandchildren Wyatt and Emberli. Dad was uncle to many nieces and nephews. He had many careers in his lifetime; truck driver, logger and cabbie to name a few but being a commercial fisherman was his true passion. He owned a number of fishing boats over the years; the Jinny, the Fear Not, the Josephine II, the Jo Marc however the Ocean Zephyr was his pride and joy. He caught the desire and thrill of fishing on the West Coast, leaving the Strait of Georgia for bigger waves and bigger catches. Fishing brought him many good lifelong friendships.
Dad was a very social guy; he enjoyed music, reading, dancing, singing, playing the guitar, playing cards and pool. He was always up for a party and was never the first to leave a good one. A fair and gentle man, politically minded and socially conscious. An eternal optimist: the glass was usually not just half full…but overflowing. He really loved life. Life loved you back Dad. Calmer seas and safe passage Dad. We love you and miss you already.
The family would like to thank the many friends and family who have given their love and support throughout. We would also like to thank the caregivers whose paths we have crossed. Thank you, Dr. Torrie and the staff, at Sow’s Ear for all your caring. And a special thank-you to the Palliative Care Team who took such good care of all of us those last few days. Palliative care is a wonderful philosophy of care that really helped make the process of losing a loved one as positive as it could be. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Palliative Care Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital if you choose. A small family gathering is planned for a future date.
