Matthew Taylor Wilson (“Mattie”), gone but NEVER forgotten, passed suddenly & unexpectedly, but peacefully – without pain, fear or anxiety – and was surrounded by people who cared for and about him. He was only 42, but struggled with the maladies of significant brain injury over the past 20 years, always haunted by his past indiscretions that got him there. He is survived by his mother Sher Wilson (who loved him and continues to love him, more than life itself), and his father Marwood Wilson, from whom Mattie chose to be estranged for many years.
He rekindled a closeness and deep faith in G-D in the final years of his life – and was close to his chaplain Kevin Arndt, an Anglican Priest – and the faith that Mattie chose on his own accord about 12 years ago. He leaves behinds many friends and mentors -- from both correctional staff and fellow inmates, alike. He loved and he was loved in return by so many individuals who advocated diligently for him over his past 3.5 years spent in custody.
Collectively, the staff and so many co-residents at “Wilkinson” had a significant, positive & profound impact on his life.
In his final months, Mattie knew he was forgiven, he was loved & cherished – and he had again returned to his “core personality” – one of kindness, humour, joy, compassion, giving and accommodating. He found and rekindled a deep faith in G-D. He learned to self-regulate his behaviours and to maintain the calm and peace he always wanted. He found respect and a new lease on life, thanks to all the programs, staffing, compassion & dedication at Wilkinson Correctional. He will be gravely missed, but never forgotten, always loved – and awaiting his family & friends on “the other side”.
Rest in peace, Mattie Wilson – your struggles have now been rewarded with ultimate peace.
