Joyce Hagedorn

May 25, 1940 — February 13, 2024

It is with great sadness and much love that we say goodbye to our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister-in-law, Mary Joyce Hagedorn, (Joyce), who passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on February 13, 2024, at the age of 83. To the very end, Joyce showed grace, dignity, strength, and a sense of humor.

Mary ‘Joyce’ Gannon was born in Ottawa on May 25, 1940, and was raised near the Ontario/Quebec border. She went to high school in New Liskeard, and then worked as a secretary in the area until 1960. After a stop in Kelowna, BC, she moved to Calgary in 1962, where she found a job at SAIT. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Bill. They were married in Calgary in December 1965. Together, they farmed at Mossleigh for 35 years. During this time, they raised three children: David, Jean Anne, and Marilynn. Joyce was an active member of the Mossleigh community. She delighted in gardening, spending leisurely hours playing cards, and expressing her creativity through quilting. Bill and Joyce were avid square dancers; they enjoyed the time they spent with their square dance community and cultivated lasting friendships. Among Joyce's cherished memories was participating in square dancing during the 1988 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies, in 2001, they retired, initially residing in Strathmore before finding solace in Parksville, and later Victoria. Surrounded by wonderful neighbors, they wholeheartedly embraced the joys of island life. With her beloved husband, Bill, Joyce had the opportunity to explore numerous beautiful places, creating cherished memories together. From RVing as snowbirds to captivating bus tours, delightful ocean cruises, and serene river cruises, they savored every moment of their adventures.

Joyce is a survived by her husband of 58 years, Bill Hagedorn; children: David (Marcia) Hagedorn, Jean Anne (Darren) Ferguson, Marilynn (Robin) Stone; her grandchildren: Matthew, Tristan, and Brianna; Trevor (Lisa) and her great-grandchild, Logan; Adam (Cynthia), and Marten. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law: Frank (Fran), Eric (Mavis), sister-in-law, Joyce, special nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

The family would like to extend their gratitude for the excellent love and care she received while living at Amica on the Gorge, and in her final days at Victoria Hospice.

Joyce will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, those who would like to honor her with a memorial contribution are asked to contribute to The Mustard Seed Street Church
