In Loving Memory of Jane Agnew Glen (née Ferguson) September 27, 1945 – March 28, 2026
Jane Agnew Glen (née Ferguson), age 80, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, in Victoria, British Columbia. She left this world knowing she was deeply loved by all who knew her.
Jane was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to James Bell (J.B.) and Hazel Ferguson. She was the second oldest of four children and shared a strong bond with her siblings Jim, Cherry, and David. She grew up in Pictou, Nova Scotia where many cherished summers were spent at the family’s Seacrest cottage overlooking Pictou Harbour—memories that nurtured her enduring love of the ocean and the outdoors.
Jane earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mount Allison University, where she also played field hockey. She later pursued her passion for health, physical activity, and recreation by completing a Bachelor of Physical Education with Honours at the University of Waterloo.
Her career in community recreation programming began in Montreal with the YMCA/YWCA and continued in Toronto and Waterloo. Jane’s passion for skiing, swimming, running (including marathons), fitness, and active living led her west to British Columbia. After working with the YMCA/YWCA of Vancouver, she settled in Victoria in 1976, where she built both a meaningful career and lasting friendships through her deep involvement with the YMCA/YWCA of Greater Victoria.
Jane brought her extensive recreation experience to Oak Bay Recreation Centre before dedicating 19 years of service to the Municipality of Saanich. There she developed, built, and nurtured inclusive community recreation programs that reflected her deep belief in access, connection, and belonging. Her contributions included establishing the L.I.F.E. (Leisure Involvement for Everyone) program, the Cultural Bridging Project, and supporting numerous volunteer and non-profit organizations. Jane’s creativity, dedication, and genuine care for people were evident in all that she did, leaving a lasting impact on the community she so lovingly served.
A loyal, compassionate, and resilient soul Jane lived fully and intentionally. She could often be found strolling along Dallas Road, walking through Beacon Hill Park, enjoying picnics at Willows Beach, listening to live music, supporting local arts, spending afternoons with friends, and cherishing time with her daughter. She was generous with both her time and her presence, always ready to offer help, encouragement, or thoughtful advice.
Jane was a role model to her daughter Kim, who learned from her the value of physical movement, a positive attitude, and the importance of staying resilient and strong through life’s challenges. The many picnics and walks they shared at Willows Beach and in Beacon Hill Park created memories that will last a lifetime. She shared an especially close bond with her brother Jim; a connection formed in childhood and deepened throughout their lives. No matter the distance or time zone, Jane, Jim, and his wife Colleen remained in regular contact, a testament to the strength and constancy of their relationship.
Jane is lovingly remembered by her daughter Kim (Geoff), her brother Jim (Colleen), and her sister Cherry as well as extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her younger brother David.
A celebration of Jane’s life will be held at a later date, with details to be shared with family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jane’s honour to the Donate Now- YMCA-YWCA OF VANCOUVER ISLAND. She would be proud to see donations that support programs to help individuals build healthy, connected lives.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Gorge Road Health Centre – Arbutus View for their care and compassion.
Jane’s beautiful smile and warm laughter reflected a quiet joy and a life lived freely; embracing each day as it came.
