Ernest James (Jim) Slotte, July 17, 1944 to August 18, 2026

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jim Slotte on August 18, 2026 while recovering from surgery in the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.

Jim was born in Nanaimo to Ernest Slotte and Isabella (nee Baynes). He was predeceased by his sister Elve Moore (nee Beck). Jim leaves behind Astrid (nee Einarsen), his wife and partner of more than 60 years, and their three sons, Vincent, Brent and Jason.

Jim was committed to his friends and family and was wholly devoted to the love of his life, Astrid. Jim and Astrid journeyed through life as true partners, celebrating the highs and carrying each other through the lows. He listened without judgement and offered sensible advice and support without strings or expectations. More than a problem solver, Jim was an innovator. His solutions weren’t temporary fixes; when Jim fixed something, it stayed fixed.

Jim was a steady ringer too. When he came to help, you could count on him to be there and get it done. That same dependability marked his working life: Jim spent 46 years at the Harmac Pulp Mill.

For recreation, Jim was defined by his love of the outdoors. His leisure usually involved a rod, gun or berry bucket and between the three, the larder was never empty.

Jim was beloved by those who knew him, even if you had only just met him. Please join us to celebrate Jim and his remarkable life at 1:00 pm, September 19, 2026, at the Nanaimo Fish and Game.
