Geraldine McGuire

Geraldine McGuire, of Sooke, B.C., passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at the age of 74. She was surrounded by her family and loved ones. Her passing will be mourned by her sisters, many nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbors and friends she leaves behind.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, to a family of six siblings, Geraldine spent her early years in Glasgow, before emigrating to Canada at the age of 16. Settling into her new life she held a variety of jobs before attending Camosun College’s Accounting Program. From there she was hired by the University of Victoria and continued taking courses through UVic. She became a Shop Steward, was elected as President of the Victoria Labour Council, and met her future husband Roderick Thompson, who was an Executive Member of the IWA Union.

Her Union career expanded rapidly, and she held numerous positions with CUPE Regional and CUPE National and completed her career as the CUPE National Secretary Treasurer until her retirement in 2001.

She was passionate, committed and had a strong desire to help and support others.

Geraldine and Rod loved Sooke and the community. It was here that they built their dream home, big enough to accommodate their two dogs, three cats and Rod’s extensive gardening pursuits. She had a passion for many things in her life, especially her animals.

Her time in Sooke was as exciting and adventurous. She became an active volunteer in several organizations: President of Sooke Fine Arts, the Board of Ayre Manor, Chairperson of Sooke Arts and Crafts, and Chairperson of the “Point’s” Strata Council.

To further her passion in “glass works”, she established her business “Confused Glass” and sold her designs and creations on Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver.

Our family was blessed to have the loving care and support of Doctors, Caregivers, Health Care Workers, generous neighbors and friends, and community support services to whom we extend our gratitude and thanks.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, and if desired, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the SPCA, Sooke Hospice, BC Cancer, or a charity of your choice.
