Doreen Saetre

February 7, 1943 — December 26, 2023

Doreen Bruce Saetre (nee Murray) of Nanaimo, BC, passed away suddenly on 26 December 2023, in her 80th year. She was surrounded by love and family at the time she passed. After over 50 years of fighting rheumatoid arthritis, she is now able to rest free of pain and be happy again.

I did not know that morning, What sorrow the day would bring. A loving heart stopped beating, I couldn't do a thing. Remembering is easy, I do it everyday. It's the heartache of losing you, That never goes away. Always in our thoughts, forever, your Loving Family.

Doreen, known as Dee to the many who loved her, was born on 7 February 1943 to parents James Bruce and Rachel Doreen (nee Francis) Murray in Vancouver, BC, where she grew up. In 1963, she met the love of her life, Olav Bernhard Saetre, and they wed on 23 March 1972 at Alexandria, Virginia, USA. Olav and Doreen sailed the world many time over as part of the Norwegian Merchant Marine. They returned to British Columbia and lived in North Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster. Doreen was a banker with CIBC, Bank of BC and HSBC. After the passing of Olav in 1988 and her beloved mother Rachel Doreen in 1996 she moved to Nanaimo in 1998 to be closer to family. She purchased a home with a ocean view and a large fenced yard.

Doreen has reunited with her parents, her loving husband Olav, and sister Joyce Young. She is survived by her brothers Stewart and Clyde. Doreen was blessed with nieces and nephews, Michelle, David, Mary, Natalie, Aaron, and Meghan.

Doreen lived for her home and family. Her sense of family was ever present. Dee was always there to comfort, encourage and console us, her door was always open. For many years in New Westminster she was a volunteer accountant for the New Westminster Symphony. She was also an avid needle worker at sea and a member of the Nanaimo Stitchery Guild until her rheumatoid arthritis forced her to stop stitching. Dee enjoyed reading and music of all types. She spent many hours walking and caring for her favourite Scottish Terriers Angus and Brodie (the reason for a large fenced yard). She also enjoyed the company of other Scottish Terriers Adie, Adie 2, Kiska, Wee Geordie, Hamish, James, and Dora.

Special thanks to the paramedics and medical staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s emergency department for their kindness and compassion. Arrangements through the Memorial Society of BC and Affordable Cremation & Burial Service, Langford, BC. Cremation. Private family service.
