Derek Gilburn Thompson
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Derek Gilburn Thompson, who left us peacefully, surrounded by love, on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the age of 49.
Derek is survived by his parents, Bernie and Sandra Thompson; his beloved wife, Jolene; his children, Josh, Sara, and Julia; his brothers, Jason (Carmel) and Aaron (Lisa Marie); and his cherished nieces and nephews, Hannah, Noah, Emma, Isaac, and Isabel.
Derek’s life was centered around his family. Whether coaching his kids’ events, camping, or skiing, he cherished every moment with them. His adventurous spirit took him from growing up on a farm in Duncan to a career that led him to Saudi Arabia, Houston, and beyond, creating lifelong friendships along the way. He found joy in his restaurant, Mangiamos, where his cooking—especially his famous chicken penne and candied pecan salad—brought people together and created lifelong connections.
In 2019, Derek was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia, a challenge he faced with courage and dignity. The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care he received at North Island Hospital and Glacierview Lodge during this time.
Derek will be deeply missed, but his kindness, passion, and love will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please reconnect with a friend or perform a random act of kindness in his memory.
